​Lake County Historical Society

Description
The Lake County Historical Society is seeking a qualified person to join the Lake County Museum’s team. The museum is located on the campus of Dakota State University in Madison, SD. The Museum is in a growth stage and we are seeking a creative person to engage the Lake County community and visitors alike with local history. The ideal candidate will establish relationships with and create programs for K-12 Lake County schools, DSU students, adult lifelong learners, community groups and organizations. This person will work in conjunction with the Museum’s Director in growing the network of community partners by creating programs and educational experiences in the museum and off site.
 
We are seeking applicants from a variety of backgrounds to ensure that our goals of community engagement, increased visibility and visitation are met. This is a part-time temporary position which has been made possible through a South Dakota Humanities Council ARPA grant. The anticipated start date January 2022 and will continue through November 2022.

Job Responsibilities
  • Establish relationships with educators, community groups and organizations and create, implement and oversee unique programs and tours.
  • Work with the Director and volunteers to develop and execute dynamic programs relating to local history by using resources from the museum and community.
  • Represent and be an advocate for the Lake County Museum.
  • Assist with the other projects in the museum as needed.
  • Serve as backup to support scheduling and other operational needs.
  • Be open to new ideas.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Museum education experience is preferred but not required.  
  • Work cooperatively with volunteers, community members, educators, groups and organizations to ensure successful program execution.
  • Be willing and available to work weekends and evenings when required for community events, programing and tours outside of regular museum hours.
  • Ability to research and write scripts for programs, exhibit labels and newsletter articles.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills and the ability to plan programs and prepare materials for the program, activity or event.  
  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Competent in using Microsoft Word and Power Point.
 
Physical Requirements
May need to lift up to 20 pounds on occasion

Job Title: Community Programing Assistant
Location: Lake County Museum 221 NE 8th Street, Madison, South Dakota
Hourly Wage: $14.00 per hour
Travel Required: Yes, within Lake County. Must have own vehicle, a valid driver’s license and insurance.
Position Type: Part – time temporary. Hire date through November 2022

We will be closed July 4 & 5th in observance of the July 4th holiday.

Call 256-5308 the previous Friday by noon

During the summer months parking is not monitored on campus.
